eBay, Amazon, Craig’s List, Ina Steiner and the truth.

I’m not going to say Ina Steiner is full of crap, that would be unfair. According to the charts posted on her AB blog, eBay has been losing rank for unique visitor traffic in the U.S.A. She says Amazon is receiving more traffic and that Craig’s List (a company partially owned by eBay) is on track to surpass eBay as well.

Somehow she neglects to mention that on the global scale, eBay is still dominating both Amazon and Craig’s List (80 million vs 67 million and 59 million). eBay is actually growing and leaving Amazon and Craig’s List behind. In the last month CL actually went down 1.52%. Have a look at the chart below:

eBay still king of unique traffic

In the 21st century, global is much more relevant than national. To be fair, both Ina’s chart and the chart I took from Compete.com mean very little. The money is made from conversion of traffic, not from how many people click a link and then close it without buying anything. I’m not even sure why CL gets mentioned. People go there looking to find prostitutes or haggle for their neighbor’s lawnmower.

I would love to learn how many of eBay’s 80 million visitors actually made purchases. The same with Amazon’s 67 million. I would love to compare the percent of buyers versus bouncers. I’d love to look at the percentage of return visitors.

I love Japanese Suspense!

What is Japanese Suspense?

It’s that unimaginative vagueness you’ll see in anime, dorama and movies from Japan. The most common will usually be two people commenting about a third person. They will say something along the lines of, “Doesn’t he remind you of that person?” They say “that person” to hold you in suspense because if they revealed “that person”’s name to you at that stage of the movie, you would have a heart attack and die. Other times you’ll be watching an action scene and one character will suggest a secret move/technique and it will be referred to as “that technique.” For example: “Ryu, you’re getting your but kicked by Sakura! I think it’s time you unleash your TRUE power and use ‘that technique’ on her.” Once again, if you were to know the name of “that technique” 5 minutes before they reveal the name (you can be sure the user will give the name before or during use) you would die!

“That place” and “that time” are also frequently used. I love it! I certainly don’t want to die from the SHOKKU! Of having that whatever revealed to me too early…

Demon Kitten vs Sephiroth

I was browsing through some Moogle videos over on Google and stumbled onto Sephiroth battling a demon kitten.

Don’t have your own Sephiroth action figure? I’ve got him and many others in my eBay store.

Caveman Dexter

This is what I’m currently pitching to Hollywood:
Caveman Dexter. Imagine a time before television, toilets, the Roman Empire or the great pyraminds. One Cro magnon will kill to satisfy a different kind of hunger!

Caveman Deb: “ughblak” (translates into F*ck)

Truer words…

“To exist in this vast universe for a speck of time is the great gift of life. Our tiny sliver of time is our gift of life. It is our only life. The universe will go on, indifferent to our brief existence, but while we are here we touch not just part of that vastness, but also the lives around us. Life is the gift each of us has been given. Each life is our own and no one else’s. It is precious beyond all counting. It is the greatest value we can have. Cherish it for what it truly is… Your life is yours alone. Rise up and live it.”

I’m Now Involved in e-Real Estate

That’s right folks. I grabbed my first parcel of internet turf back in 1998. For years I was tempted to snag more domains. There was a time when registrars were killing each other offering dirt cheap domain registration. For a time you could get 1 year of .com hosting for $5/domain. I think the going rate now is about $10/year.

I’ve got 20 domains listed for sale on eBay and here’s the list:

Browse My Current Offering

www.bankheists.com — I’m imagine this site full of stories about bank robberies, reviews of popular bank heist books and movies and lots of advertising.
www.beguz.com — beguz can’t be choozahz or Johnny beguz?
www.cssfu.com — your custom style sheets are no match for my hidden dragon technique!
www.edcoo.com
www.elewd.com — I’m not sure if this should be a porn site (e-lewd) or if it’s a site about how to elude the police with discount radar/laser detectors.
www.fixedcostads.com — awesome name for flat fees on advertising. Who wants to bid?
www.lawnelf.com — I’ve heard people refer to garden gnomes as lawn elves.
www.lviews.com — I’m thinking either an opinion site for lesbians, libertarians or lithuanians. Maybe it’s just pictures of the beautiful views of Louisiana.
www.noocu.com
www.nookza.com — this one just sounds fun.
www.oorge.com — Great name for an energy drink.
www.qwiva.com — this one gives me goosebumps. I might actually keep this one
www.soxmy.com
www.sufsu.com
www.sypee.com
www.uzhq.com — Uzi headquarters? Uther Zimmerman’s High Quality wares?
www.wiines.com — All Nintendo from the newest console the Wii, to the first console the NES. Or maybe it’s a good typo name for wines.com?
www.zwazu.com — Someone tell me why I’m envisioning a toucan as the mascot for Zwazu?
www.zykok.com — Definite a great name for an anti-depressant drug!

Theoretical Physics, Grid Computing and You!

Hey there,

As some of you may know, I have a lot of hobbies. One of those hobbies is understanding the universe. What better way to do that then by dabbling in theoretical physics? With my computer science background though, I take a different approach than other scientists in the field.

What I am currently working on is using grid computing to calculate how much wood a woodchuck could chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood. Since woodchucks have not evolved to the point where they are able to chuck wood themselves, this is all theoretical of course. This means there’s lots of math and simulations needing to be performed in order to find that answer.

If you’re not already familiar with grid computing, you could google it or check wikipedia for a long-winded definition. The short version is basically you have a group of users who are willing to share their computers in order to help solve whatever problem the grid is working on. Most grids with volunteer members give up only a small portion of their computer’s unused CPU speeds so that they are able to use their PCs without feeling hampered by helping. A few years ago I did protein folding calculations for the Human Genome Project and it was really cool. SETI uses a grid to help sort through it’s collected data.

If you’re interested in helping me with “Project Woodchuck.” That’s great! No need to fill out a form or e-mail me. I’ll contact you! Together we’ll find out the answer. I am also in contact with various departments in the government to set up a grid for two operations in the future: The IRS is curious just how many seashells “she” sells by the seashore and I’m pretty sure we’ll all curious to know how many pickled peppers Peter Piper picks on a yearly basis.

Stay tuned for more details.

Gigi Edgley Sells Goodies on eBay

So I’m browsing eBay looking for some Farscape Toys and I notice that there’s a seller selling items from Gigi Edgley’s personal collection.  If you don’t know who that is, she played Chiana on the ubercool SciFi show Farscape.  You can see the current list of items for sale here: Gigi Edgley Collectibles and you can browse through the sold items here: Sold Gigi Edgley Collectibles.  There was a cool South Park Scorpius shirt that sold for $41.  I had no idea they were even made.

The seller seems legit as Gigi is pictured holding the items.  It should also be noted:

“BONUS #1-Gigi will personally sign it, anywhere with whatever the winning bidder wants (no signature, only signature, signature with a name or note, etc.). She’ll even take a photo with the signed item before shipping it out as proof that it is her signature!

BONUS #2-She’s also willing to write a small note (on the back of a Chiana fan card picture) describing the item, stating it was from her personal collection and any other details you’d like. She’ll take a photo with the note as well as the item, and you will receive the pictures via email while it’s being shipped!”

I thought that was pretty cool and worth checking out.  I’ll be watching again soon since they ship worldwide. :)

The Guild Season 3, Finnsmulders.com and H2CO3

So I was watching season 3 of “The Guild,” a very enjoyable Youtube TV show about people from a MMORPG and their lives in and out of the game. It’s a really great show. In one of the episodes, they made a reference to www.finnsmulders.com and it turns out they have made the web page in real life as well. I love when TV shows and movies do that. Browsing the site I went ahead and peeked at the source code and found some cool messages as well as a link to Axis of Anarchy the fictional guild run by Wil Wheaton’s character. This is the second time I’ve seen him playing an antagonistic character and he’s done really well (the other show being Big Bang Theory). I look forward to seeing him in more things.

The other cool thing about finnsmulders.com was the music. I googled some of the lyrics but couldn’t find the song. I found some sites for The Guild with people inquiring about the name of the musician with no luck. Well I continued digging. The name of the song is H2CO3 and the singer is NRAN. You can checkout NRAN’s MySpace page and you’ll find H2CO3 as well as other songs available to download for free. I’m getting the rest of the album as I write this. If anyone was looking for the song from finnsmulders.com then check out that MySpace page and enjoy!
