The Walking Dead: Lolz

Rick Lori and Baby Shane

I haven’t seen last night’s episode but I hear it will be February before the rest are aired. Damn, I hate when networks do that! What better way is there to ring in the new year then with HEADSHOTS!

In the meantime, check out my Walking Dead Tees available at great prices. My favorite is the “RV There Yet?”

Another Battlestar Galactica Prequel

A while back I wrote about Machinima’s Mortal Kombat series. It was pretty good and I look forward to seeing more. The other day a friend of mine told me that Machinima also has a Battlestar Galactica series! It takes place 10 years into the first war with the Cylons. William Adama is an ensign eager to kick some toaster butt. So far there’s only been 6 episodes with parts 7 and 8 coming out in 6 days.

These aren’t just fan fiction videos by the way. These are actually authorized productions. The acting and dialog are fine though some of the CGI could be better.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

I was a big fan of the show when it was originally airing and had seen most of the episodes up until the last 2 seasons when my interests turned to other things. I did manage to tape the final 2 hour episode on VHS and watch it though having missed many episodes I was not really excited by the ending.

So over the last month I’ve been watching the entire series and I’ve just finished today. I do think it was a great show though I couldn’t help but be amused at how many episodes involved various characters being stranded on a random planet. First off, the show is about a space station and there’s well over a dozen episodes where someone crashes on a planet. Second, you would think after the first time something like this happened that the senior staff would say, “Hey, from now on there’s a new policy. If you find a planet that catches your eye, text us your coordinates and other stuff before going even a kilometer closer!” That way when you are sucked down to the planet or caught in a storm or teleported through time, the search parties can find you easier.

The biggest beef I had with the show is the complete lack of surveillance cameras within the station! Even in the 80s, Las Vegas casinos had hundreds (thousands?) of cameras covering every inch of the casino at multiple angles. Yet 400 years later when Garak’s shop is bombed, we have no idea who walked through the door because there’s no cameras on the promenade. Someone walked into someone’s quarters and murdered them? Sorry! No cameras in the hallway. Heck, the tiny 60-room Red Roof Inn that I worked at 8 years ago had cameras in the hallways and they were inexpensive then. I realize having cameras would hamper the plots of the stories but perhaps it would have forced the writers to become more creative.

Another problem I had with the show was that the Founders were able to gather vast amounts of intelligence on everyone in the Alpha Quadrant and particularly Starfleet. Even so, the Founders somehow ignored that information and considered Starfleet to be a dangerous threat with secret motives to conquer and kill them. Regardless of the overwhelming evidence stating that Starfleet was a bloated bureaucracy whose only goals were to get voluntary planets to join them to create more bureaucrats.

Complaints aside I did really enjoy the series. I liked how although there were filler episodes, the story arc would continue in the background.

My next series to watch is Star Trek: Voyager. I believe I saw the first 2 seasons though I’m not sure how much. I remember one of the maquis women joining the Kazon aliens and having the dude’s baby. I also remember them adding Seven of Nine. I do believe I stopped watching this series because I found it a bit on the boring side so I am hoping perhaps my attitude will be different now that I am older. When I first saw the movie Event Horizon back in the 90s, I did not like it. Years later rewatching it, I was able to gain an appreciation for it. So I am crossing my fingers that I’ll be able to enjoy Voyager. Then again after sitting through all 5 seasons of The Wire, the most boring TV show ever, I am sure I can tolerate almost anything.

StarCom

If you’ve never heard of it, StarCom was a cartoon that aired in the fall of 1987. There was a toyline of course. Although I hear the toyline was considered a flop in the USA compared to sales in Europe and Asia. I had a few of the spaceships myself though my mom did not save them. I’ve seen them on eBay before and they are not cheap.

I watched the first episode and it wasn’t bad. It certainly wasn’t as cheesy as some of the other 80s cartoons I’ve recently gone back to watch. The plot revolves around the U.S. Space Force, StarCom and their battle with the Shadow Force.

The toys were pretty sweet as well. The figures had magnets in their feet that allowed them to stick to the aircraft. Not only that but the magnets enabled the vehicles to “come alive” such as activated a missile launcher or raising an elevator.

As I understand it, only the first 3 episodes were released on DVD and the plans for future DVD releases were scrapped. It would seem that someone has uploaded all 13 episodes on Youtube (divided into 39 parts) and they can be viewed there.

Here’s links to the 3 parts of Episode 1:

Starcom Space Force Episode 1 Part 1
Starcom Space Force Episode 1 Part 2
Starcom Space Force Episode 1 Part 3

You should be able to find the rest on your own just searching Youtube for “Starcom Space Force Episode X part Y” where you change the X and Y to whatever episode and part you are looking for. For those that do recall the cartoon series and want to relive the good ol’ days, there’s other big kids selling their old collections here:

Castle Season Four casts Trektors!

Trektor is my new word. Consider it a portmanteau of “Star Trek” and “actor.” On this season of Castle we gain Penny Johnson as the new captain. Penny played Cassidy Yates on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, which happens to be my favorite Star Trek series. We also gain Michael Dorn who I’m sure we all know as Worf!

I’m only two episodes in and when I saw “Michael Dorn” in the list of credits at the beginning of episode one I was very excited. I couldn’t imagine who he was going to play. I was crushed when I found out he was playing a police psychologist (or psychiatrist, whichever…”shrink” s’il vous plait).

Of course we get to episode two and it turns out there’s a vigilante killer with a very distinctive voice. Who could it be? I haven’t finished the episode yet but I’m pretty sure ol’ Worf is more than just a doctor. This is also the “superhero” that was hinted at during the Comic-con panel this year.

Anyway, if you’re not watching Castle then you need to go to Netflix or eBay/Amazon and get the DVDs ASAP. It’s a fun series and I’m looking forward to the rest of this season.

Ok well I’ve paused the episode just so I could blog about my excitement seeing 2 Trektors show up this season. Time to finish watching!

Jeremiah the T.V. Series

So I just finished watching Jeremiah. If you weren’t aware of this show back when it aired (2002-2004), it’s a post-apocalyptic series starring Luke Perry (yes Dylan from 90210 1.0) and Malcolm-Jamal Warner (Theo Huxtable!). I love a good dystopian story and they are hard to come by.

Jeremiah was written and created by J Michael Straczynski, better known for creating Babylon 5. Jeremiah wasn’t the greatest show but it also wasn’t horrible. When I first heard about Jeremiah I had thought it was just a rip off of Jericho but I didn’t realize at the time that Jeremiah was aired 4 years sooner. The story tells us of a world where 6 billion people died (virtually everyone except for children that had not yet hit puberty) caused from a plague they call “the Big Death.” The series sticks to just the continental U.S.A. and focuses on the people trying to rebuild a country and the obstacles they face.

One thing that irked me was the lack of cars everywhere. With over 100 million cars in the USA, if 90% of the population were wiped out, I would have expected to see many more abandoned cars everywhere. I won’t hold this against Jeremiah too much though, I could come up with explanations to the lack of cars much easier than I could explaining why every alien and human from another world is able to speak English on StarGate…or why those humans have flashlights and walkie talkies that look just like ours.

The series made it through 2 seasons (35 Episodes total). Unfortunately JMS and MGM did not work well together and JMS left the show. Luckily they decided to cancel the series as opposed to bringing on new writers. Without spoiling, I will say that the series does end without one of those horrible cliffhangers and whether the ending was a happy one is open to interpretation.

Jeremiah was originally based on a Belgian comic book series by Hermann Huppen first written in 1979 but is still written today. You can find the comics fairly inexpensively on eBay for $5-20 each.

What I do find surprising is that although you can find the complete first season on DVD on eBay for under $10, the second season is priced on eBay, Amazon.com and Walmart.com for over $50! I guess the first season’s sales were not as stellar and production on season two DVDs was much less. Best Buy has season one available but doesn’t even offer season two. So if you find an inexpensive copy of season two, be sure to buy it.

My Favorite Thing About Charmed

So I’ve pretty much watched complete seasons of every TV series worth watching in the last decade. In November, I started watching Charmed. A lot can be said about this series and it was probably said years ago when the show was airing so I won’t bother.

I do want to point out one thing that the internet seems to have overlooked. There seems to be one prop camera that is consistently used over and over again over the seasons of the show. It’s a Nikon camera and I’m not sure of the model.

When Prue decides to become a photographer she’s got the Nikon camera. Whenever someone like Sheridan is using a camera to catch the girls in action–the Nikon camera! When Phoebe is getting photographed for magazines? It’s with that Nikon camera. When Piper, Leo and the kids are getting their family portrait…guess what? It’s that SAME Nikon camera.

If you’re about to watch all 8 seasons of the show, take a look any time someone has a camera.

Breaking Bad in Real Life?

It’s not just a boring T.V. show! It’s also reality…

BOSTON (CBS) – A 74-year-old professor who has lectured at Boston schools for two decades has been charged with running a methamphetamine lab. Irina Kristy, who teaches math at Boston University and Suffolk University, will be arraigned next month for allegedly running a meth lab out of her Somerville home. Kristy’s son Grigory pleaded not guilty to the same charges last month. Kristy has been placed on administrative leave at Suffolk. BU officials, meanwhile, said they are aware of the charges.

Mortal Kombat Legacy: A Mortal Kombat Miniseries

Mortal Kombat Original logo
I recently heard about a website called Machinima. They specialize in making video game related videos. I clicked a link from their website expecting some sort of fan made videos with scenes from different Mortal Kombat games. Instead, I found an actual live-action mini series! Apparently it’s licensed by Warner Brothers. Michael Jai White is Jax, Sonya Blade is played by Jeri Ryan, Tahmoh Penikett plays Striker. Baraka, Kano, Kitana, Meleena, Shao Khan, Sindel, Johnny Cage, Raiden, Sub Zero and Scorpion are also portrayed in the series. So far there have only been 8 episodes and I have definitely enjoyed them.

You can watch the episodes for free on Youtube: here. When you’re done watching the episodes you can snag some cool Mortal Kombat collectibles at great prices from my eBay listings below:
