Deadpool vs Gangnam Style Video

So unless you don’t have friends on Facebook, then you’ve probably seen multiple links to Psy’s Gangnam Style video. There’s been a few parodies and some I’ve found appealing. The Miss Korea 2012 “Miko Style” was entertaining (though it takes a minute for them to start the song).

I know there was a big anime convention this previous weekend in California and it looks like in between, a Deadpool Cosplayer and friends made an awesome take on Oppan Gangnam Style:

And when you’re done watching the video, check out our awesome Deadpool t-shirts for sale on eBay

And in case you couldn’t get enough Deadpool. Here’s D.Piddy at Anime Expo 2012 dancing with a number of cosplayers. It was really awesome to see a Kefka from Final fantasy VI starting at 3:17 into the video!

Decent Alien Invasion Movie with a Bad Rap: Skyline

Skyline [2010] was actually a pretty good alien invasion movie regardless of what the ratings show.  If you’re not aware of the plot the story is about aliens that come to earth and begin taking people.  When I read someone comparing Skyline to Cloverfield I was worried.  I haven’t seen Clovervfield but I heard it is one of those bouncy cam movies and you never get to see the monster.  The comparison is bollocks!  First there is no bouncy cam!  Second, in Skyline you definitely get to see the aliens.  That’s a big deal for me.  With a lot of alien invasion movies you either never see the aliens or you only get cut scenes and glimpses of them.

So why do the aliens attack?  That’s not actually revealed in the movie.  The aliens do remove brains from humans and for a purpose.  It’s not said if that is the sole reason for the alien attack or if that’s just the first part of a larger project.  The aliens in this movie were cybernetic organisms which I thought was really cool.

The movie does not resolve itself by the end.  Could there be a sequel?  Perhaps but I don’t think that is planned or necessary.  The movie just did not need to continue.

Reasons why alien movies usually fail my approval test:

  1. They don’t show the aliens or they don’t show them enough.
  2. The aliens start their attack strong but then the writers force them to act uncharacteristically.
  3. The aliens are defeated by dumb luck and/or a Windows-compatible virus.
  4. The aliens master interstellar/intergalactic travel and then invade the earth with subpar technology.

Skyline manages to avoid three out of four of these which is great.  #4 might have been a failure in that in this movie the aliens did not have infrared or x-ray vision to see around counters or through blinds covering windows.  I can live with that!

King of Fighters vs Tekken

So I just finished watching King of Fighters the movie. A few days ago I gave a review for Tekken the Movie. I thought I would compare the two. Both were live action movies made for western audiences.

Just like Tekken, I was unfamiliar with the game story line for the King of Fighters games. This gives me an advantage over those who are aware of the original story as both movies probably butchered the game story. The dialog in KoF was a bit cheesy at times but overall I was pretty happy with the story. Three ancient artifacts help teleport fighters into another dimension via Bluetooth hands free devices (lol, no joke!) and they are able to battle it out with one another to finally win the title “King of Fighters.” In this other dimension is an evil being called “Orochi.” Which is a Japanese term for a snake or serpent. Orochi wants to escape the dimension and probably rule/destroy our own.

The cast had quite a few familiar faces. Francoise Yip, Maggie Q and Ray Park were all in the movie. I like all three actors and have been following their work for quite some time. Ray Park almost always plays an antagonist. He handles the role well though I’m looking forward to him being a good guy in a future action movie. He was Snake Eyes in the GI Joe movie but he didn’t speak in that movie and he was covered in costume. Sean Farris played Kyo Kusanagi and received top billing but I’m not really familiar with him. I did see “Never Back Down” but I’ve mostly forgotten that movie. Will Yun Lee was also in the movie. I had to look up his name as I recognized him but couldn’t remember his name. I’ve seen him in a few other shows and enjoy his characters.

The special effects in the movie were pretty cool. They were battling with different color fire balls/chi/enery or whatever you wish to call it. IMDB.com listed the movie’s budget at $12,000,000 so I found the effects to be surprisingly “special” for their cost.

If I had to recommend King of Fighters or Tekken, I would definitely suggest King of Fighters. Though I did enjoy both, King of Fighters was slightly more enjoyable.

I wonder if there will ever be a Virtua Fighter movie.

Tekken: the Movie (2011)

I just finished watching Tekken. It’s a live action movie based on the popular series of video games.

I did enjoy the movie. There was some decent fighting and it wasn’t too excessive. That is to say, the fights lasted a reasonable amount of time. A 10-minute battle gets boring (see the Matrix 2). My one grievance with the movie is toward the end…

***PLOT SPOILERS***

The tournament’s winner is declared yet 3 fighters had not yet been eliminated. I realize that their fights would be unnecessary to continue with the plot, but to me the movie feels incomplete without those minor battles.

I also found Jin’s lack of monogamy amusing. Society tends to assume that a couple will be exclusive. So when Jin and Christie are having their fun in the middle of the movie, I couldn’t help but laugh when Jin goes back to his chocolate-loving girlfriend after the tournament.

***END PLOT SPOILER***

So I won’t say it was a great movie. I won’t even say it was a good movie. It was an entertaining movie and I wouldn’t warn anyone away from seeing it. Though to be fair I am not familiar with the Tekken storylines so for all I know they butchered the plot, which is highly likely.

Next video game movie on my watch list is King of Fighters.

Are Green Lantern Movie Critics Actually Parallax Minions?

Yesterday I was trying to decide if I should see Green Lantern in 3D or the regular version. I went online to see if there were any opinions. All I found were unkind movie reviews.

One such review was written by someone named Josh Wilding. My biggest grievance of his laundry list of complaints is about the abundance of unnecessary humor in the movie. About half way through the movie I couldn’t help but wonder, “where’s all of these hit and miss jokes Josh promised?” Sure there was some levity early in the movie but that was necessary for Hal Jordan’s character. Hal was supposed to be an irresponsible guy. Having him acting care free is how you portray that. Later on in the movie things naturally change. The humor was actually quite minimal; especially when compared to another comic book movie, The Green Hornet. Even Iron Man had more jokes being cracked and yet that was a great movie.

As far as how this rates against other comic book movies, I’d say it was certainly better than Elektra, Daredevil, Punisher 1 and 2 and Ghost Rider. I’d rate it at about the same level as the Ed Norton Hulk, Wolverine Origins and the Fantastic Four. That puts it right below Iron Man and Thor.

So anyway, I usually never listen to critics. This time I did and I was hesitant to see Green Lantern. I ended up not going for 3D and I’m now wishing I had paid extra for it as it was definitely an enjoyable movie. If you were on the fence about seeing this movie, definitely go see it.

The Mighty Thor: Movie Review

Well I just got back from Thor. I’ve been jazzed to see this since I saw his hammer at the end of Iron Man 2. Note: there is more to see after the credits of Thor so stick around. I had never read much Thor when I collected comic books. I started right around the time that Thor was gone/dead/missing and Eric Masterson had to take over. I don’t remember the stories now since that was 20 years ago but I do remember liking it. Even so, that was really the origins of Thunderstrike, not Thor.

From what I know about Norse mythology, the Asgards were not too badly portrayed. Growing up, I had been under the impression that Loki was the god of mischief. Later in my college years, I was told that Loki was the Norse god of fire but he was also a very clever god, responsible for helping the other gods obtain many of their relics. There was no mention of a god of fire in the movie.

Over all the movie was better than I expected it to be. I’m not sure if I liked it as much as I did Iron Man, though it has to be close. Iron Man has been one of my most favorite of the new comic book movies. Natalie Portman gets more gorgeous every time I see her. I can’t rate her ability to act because every time she smiles on screen I’m too busy swooning. Idris Elba was pretty cool as Heimdall. I was impressed with his character Stringer Bell in the Wire (horribly boring show) as the drug deal who goes to college to learn more about business. I also recently watched the first series of Luther, a show Idris stars in over in the United Kingdom.

Over the last six months I’ve been dealing with a vendor that sells licensed Marvel t-shirts. I’ve got a few Thor shirts and some of them are really bad ass. You can see them on eBay:

train_man: densha otoko

I just finished watching densha otoko. The imdb summary says:

The supposedly true story of a 23-year-old otaku (Japanese geek) who intervenes when a drunk man is harassing several women on a train. The otaku ultimately begins dating one of the women, and posts on a website asking for advice every step of the way.

I’d say that’s a very accurate description of the movie. I really enjoyed this movie but let me say that I didn’t think it was the end of all romance movies or anything like that. For nerd romance though, it did well. From the gaijin point-of-view, it gave me more insight into the Japanese culture. I was excited to recognize the Gundam figures. At one point it looks like train_man drops either a Meer or Lacus figure (I’m not sure which) on the ground.

Don’t expect too much mention of anime, manga or games. They take a backseat to the story itself. Our train_man and his love interest, nicknamed “Hermes” after a gift she gives him early in the movie, are aided by some amusing characters on the internet. I had suspected that train_man was posting on 2ch (the inspiration for 4chan). Wikipedia confirmed that the “true story” originated on 2ch.net.

What really interested me most was the lack of griefers. Those people who came to train_man’s aid were genuinely trying to help. I just cannot believe that no one came along and gave bad advice on purpose, pretending to be Hermes or some attempted to antagonize train_man in some way. Perhaps that is how it really happened but that was left out of the movie to keep us focused on the main plot of the story. Either that, or 2ch is predominantly full of decent people and Rickrolls are non-existent.

I also understand that there is a T.V. show based on the story as well. I’m not sure I will bother as I’m sure they will just drag out the 100-minute movie into 10-13 episodes. I definitely recommend the movie though.

Another interesting fact is the tea company mentioned in the movie, Benoist, is NOT the only tea company to hold a set of three Royal Warrants. According to wikipedia, “a search of the Royal Warrant Holders Association website reveals this to actually be true of R. Twining & Co.” Even so, Benoist found their sales tripled after the release of the movie. That is some powerful marketing!

Find a not so cheap copy of the DVD on Amazon here.

The Restless

I have only seen about a dozen Korean movies. Until two days ago I was not impressed. I am not one to give up on a country though just because of a few bad movies. The U.S. has 131,218 bad movies.  Yes, that’s right I counted them.

The Legend of the Shadowless Sword (2005) is the first of the two movies that I really enjoyed. The second movie was The Restless (2006). The Restless was my favorite of the two. The Netflix synopsis reads:

After his beloved fiancé is killed by demons, Yi Gwak (Woo-sung Jung) joins the royal demon-hunting squad and distinguishes himself as a great hero. And though Yi eventually falls in battle, his adventures are just beginning.

That’s really just the back story. Yi Gwak ends up in a place called Midheaven which is a realm between worlds where spirits go for 49 days before they are reincarnated. Yi Gwak, however, is not a spirit but a living human. An evil rebellion is afoot and Yi Gwak must stop it.

The special effects were special for sure. I watch a lot of foreign movies and good special effects are rare. I would not say the movie out did Zu Warriors, but it was a respectable challenger. If you are looking for a good sword fighting movie with an interesting story then I definitely recommend “The Restless.”
